Landau damping

Description

The damping of a longitudinal plasma wave of finite amplitude is considered. It is shown that the Landau result is the first term in a systematic expansion in a small parameter, and the corrections for finite wave amplitude are shown to be fifth order in the small parameter. The contributions to the damping from particles with different velocities near the phase velocity are explicitly calculated and this leads to a simple physical picture of the damping process
