Impact of activated carbon treatment on adsorption of trace ions from aqueous solutions

Description

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of the relatively simple adsorption technique to remove uranyl or nickel ions from the dilute aqueous solutions using original and four modified activated carbon samples. The activated carbon samples were characterized. The amounts of uranyl or nickel ions removed by one gram of activated carbon were found to increase with increasing equilibrium concentration of either ions. The sorption isotherms were analyzed according to Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich equations. It is concluded that the adsorption of uranyl or nickel ions takes place by ion-exchange mechanism. The sorption capacity and the mean energy of sorption of uranyl and nickel ions by the different activated carbons were estimated and were found to increase with treatment and with nitric acid concentration
