HERMES III is a 20 MV 500-800 kA linear induction electron accelerator being designed for use as a large area uniform source of flash γ-rays. At the exit of HERMES III a diode is placed, which converts the electrical energy to bremsstrahlung radiation. 2-D simulations of electron flow in the anode-cathode gap of the diode, when using a planar diode-converter, indicate that the beam forms a weak pinch that can be described by a mean pinch angle, Θ, that is dependent on the diode impedance, Z, and voltage, V, through an empirical relation. For HERMES III parameters, Θ varies between 330 and 470, which results in excessive on-axis radiation. This paper discusses a modification to the anode that reduces Θ and results in substantially improved radiation uniformity
