Oxidation Behaviour of High Chromium Ferritic Steels for SOFC Interconnect

Description

The oxidation behaviour of two Fe-Cr ferritic steels (1Al and RA) developed as candidates for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) interconnect was studied in this paper. Isothermal oxidation tests were carried out in air in the temperature range 800- 10000 C. A total isothermal oxidation time of 1000 h was covered. The growth rate of the oxide scale was found to follow a parabolic law in the initial stage of oxidation. The value of the parabolic rate constant increased with increasing oxidation temperature. Alloy 1Al exhibited higher oxidation resistance while alloy RA showed spalling behavior when oxidized at 900 and 10000 C. The extent of spalling increased with increasing the oxidation temperature. Both alloys have similar scale morphology and x-ray diffraction analysis showed that both ferritic steels developed a Cr2O3 layer with an outer layer of Mn Cr2O4 spinel and a minor amount of FeCr2O4 spinel.
