Annual report 1998-99

This report contains the activities of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, the Boards Secretariat and its specialists technical committee which covered the following chartered functions of the board: (1) Developing safety documents essential for the various stages such as siting, design, construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning of nuclear plants, (2) licensing manufacturing units under DAE and their operating personnel, (3) issuing authorisations for operation of nuclear plants and other radiation installations, (4) approving competent persons under the factories act, 1948 (5) prescribing radiation exposure limits for workers in the plants and general public, (6) conducting safety reviews of projects under design, construction and plants under operation, (7) reviewing the emergency preparedness plans prepared by nuclear installations, (8) organising regulatory inspections, (9) ensuring compliance with the stipulated safety requirements, (10) assessment of radiological safety status with regard to personnel exposures and environmental discharges of radioactivity, (11) assessment of industrial safety status in the DAE units, (12) keeping the general public informed of regulatory actions and (13) funding safety research and training activities as related to the regulatory functions of the Board
