Description
The Spent Fuel Element Pond at AERE, Harwell. The Spent Fuel Element Pond at Harwell was built to provide a multi-megacuriesource of gamma radiation using the spent fuel elements of DIDO and PLUTO. The materials which have been processed include medical equipment on pilot and production scales, polyethylene insulation, mechanical rigs for long-term irradiation of lubricating oils and a wide range of experimental samples. The handling and distribution of the spent fuel elements in the pond has included considerations of criticality, contamination and heat dissipation. The decay of the short-lived components of the gross fission products in the fuel elements entails frequent radiation dose level measurements. When high efficiency of radiation utilization and good uniformity of dosage are required, the materials are rearranged during treatment. The Package Irradiation Plant at Wantage The gamma radiation processing plant at the Wantage Research Laboratory was designed to provide a wide choice of dose levels of radiation on a semi-production scale. The plant has been in operation since mid-1960, and experience has been gained in the treatment of materials for experimental Work and in routine irradiations of medical equipment. The safety system for the protection of the staff against accidental irradiation has proved simple and effective. The conveyor system which handles individual packages has given some trouble, particularly in the automatic input store which is outside the concrete shield. Both mechanical and acoustic guard systems have been developed which are capable of stopping the conveyors in a fraction of a second. The behaviour of metal surfaces in the irradiation chamber has been noted; the effects of ozone, humiditv and gamma radiation have befen less than expected. The behaviour of several lubricants in the irradiation chamber have also been noted. (author)

Bassin pour cartouches de combustible irradiees installe a l'AERE (Etablissement de recherches sur l'energie atomique) de Harwell. Le bassin pour cartouches de combustible irradiees construit a Harwell est une source de rayons gamma de plusieurs megacuries qui utilise le combustible provenant des reacteurs DIDO et PLUTO. Ont ete traites des instruments medicaux (a l'echelle semi-industrielle et industrielle), des isolants en polyethylene, des lubrifiants (au moyen de dispositifs mecaniques pour irradiation prolongee) et un grand nombre d'echantillons experimentaux. Pour la manutention et la repartition des cartouches irradiees, on a tenu compte de considerations telles que l'etat critique, la contamination et la dissipation de la chaleur. La desintegration des produits de fission (a courte periode) exige que le debit de dose soit frequemment mesure. Lorsqu'il est necessaire d'atteindre une haute efficacite dans l'utilisation des rayonnements et d'obtenir des doses tres uniformes, on modifie la disposition des materiaux durant le traitement. Installation de Wantage pour l'irradiation de paquets L'installation d'irradiation gamma du Laboratoire de recherches de Wantage offre une large gamme de doses pour des operations semi-industrielles. L'installation fonctionne depuis juillet 1960. Elle a permis d'acquerir une certaine experience en ce qui concerne le traitement de materiaux pour travaux de recherche et l'irradiation courante d'instruments medicaux. Les mesures de protection du personnel contre une exposition accidentelle se sont revelees simples et efficaces. Le convoyeur qui transporte les paquets a ete a l'origine de quelques ennuis, notamment au point de chargement automatique qui se trouve en dehors de la protection en beton. On a installe des dispositifs acoustiques d'alerte et mecaniques de securite; ceux-ci peuvent arreter le convoyeur en une fraction de seconde. Les auteurs ont observe le comportement des surfaces metalliques dans la chambre d'irradiation; les effets de l'ozone, de l'humidite et des rayons gamma ont ete moins prononces que prevu. Estanque para elementos combustibles irradiados del AERE (Harwell). El estanque para elementos combustibles irradiados de Harwell se construyo con el fin de disponer de una fuente de varios megacuries de radiacion gamma, alimentada con los elementos combustibles irradiados de los reactores DIDO y PLUTO. Se han tratado, entre otros materiales, articulos medicos en escala experimental e industrial, aislantes de polietileno, aceites lubricantes con ayuda de dispositivos mecanicos para irradiacion prolongada y una gran variedad de muestras experimentales. Para la manipulacion y distribucion de los elementos combustibles irradiados, se han tenido en cuenta las condiciones de criticidad, contaminacion y disipacion del calor en el estanque. La desintegracion de los productos de fision de periodo corto en los elementos combustibles obliga a medir con frecuencia la intensidad de la radiacion. Cuando se desea obtener un rendimiento de irradiacion elevado y una uniformidad de dosis satisfactoria, se modifica la disposicion de los materiales durante el tratamiento. Instalacion de Wantage para la irradiacion de paquetes La planta de irradiacion del Wantage Research Laboratory se ha proyectado de modo que permita obtener una amplia gama de intensidades de irradiacion, en escala semiindustrial. La planta se encuentra en servicio desde mediados de i960; se ha adquirido experiencia en el tratamiento de materiales para trabajos de prueba y en la irradiacion corriente de articulos medicos. El sistema de proteccion del personal contra irradiaciones accidentales es sencillo y eficaz. El dispositivo transportador empleado para loe paquetes ha ocasionado algunas dificultades, sobre todo en el punto de carga automatica situado fuera del blindaje de hormigon. Se han ideado dispositivos protectores mecanicos y acusticos capaces de detener las cintas transportadoras en una fraccion de segundo. Se ha observado el comportamiento de las superficies metalicas en la .camara de irradiacion. Los efectos del ozono, la humedad y los rayos gamma son menos importantes de lo que se pensaba. Tambien se ha estudiado el comportamiento de varios lubricantes en la camara de irradiacion. (author)Abstract (Russian)
