The noble gases said to be inert: a modern chemistry

Description

The historical aspect of ''Noble'' gases -helium, neon, argon, krypton, radon- is reviewed. It was necessary to wait more than sixty years, for the time of the nuclear industry, with the development of fluorine chemistry: then, fluorine, the most reactive gas was mastered and used; N. Bartlett, in 1962, discovered the xenon fluorides and gave birth to a most fruitful field of modern chemistry. Today number of compounds exist and are used in very diverse domains: nuclear chemistry, rocket fuels, biochemical, organic and medical applications. In particular trapping of radon in uranium mines by BrF3 and use of RnF2 in radiotherapy are briefly examined

Abstract (French)

On passe en revue l'aspect historique des gaz ''nobles'' -helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, radon-. Il a fallu attendre le temps de l'industrie nucleaire, avec le developpement de la chimie du fluor, pour que ce gaz parmi les plus reactifs fut enfin maitrise et utilise. On a vu ainsi eclore une chimie des plus fecondes liee a la decouverte par N. Bartlett en 1962, des fluorures de Xenon. Aujourd'hui des centaines de composes existent et sont utilises dans les domaines les plus varies: chimie nucleaire, comburant de fusee, applications biochimiques, organiques et medicales, en particulier ou le piegeage du radon dans les mines d'uranium par BrF3 et l'utilisation de RnF2 en radiotherapie
