Description

A feasibility study of 57Fe in-beam Moessbauer spectroscopy with a 57Mn secondary ion beam at Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC) was carried out as a first attempt to implement a research facility for impurity and exotic state studies of materials using unstable nuclear probes. A 59Co primary beam of 500 MeV was irradiated to a 15 mm thick Be target to yield 57Mn with the intensity of 2 x 105 ppp at the sample. A Moessbauer spectrum of aluminum was obtained and its spectroscopic parameters agreed with the already known values. We successfully demonstrated the 57Mn beam at HIMAC is of practical use for Moessbauer spectroscopy. Zinc oxide was chosen for the first sample of practical interest and a Moessbauer measurement was attempted. (author)
