Parity nonconservation in two-nucleon systems
Description
The observation of a violation of the parity symmetry in two-nucleon systems implies the presence of a weak hadronic force. The positive effect reported by Lobashov et al. in the reaction np → dγ, for the circular polarization of the gamma ray, would imply a large value for the parity nonconserving (PNC) amplitude. A transmission experiment has been undertaken for 15-MeV longitudinally polarized protons on hydrogen. A transmission experiment for 6-GeV polarized protons on Be and on H2O is in progress at the ZGS at Argonne National Laboratory. The current results of the latter two experiments are summarized, and the relation to theoretical calculations is discussed. (2 figures, 1 table) (U.S.)
