Comparative study of two surgical techniques used in surgery of retained mandibular third molars, in patients treated at the Facultad de Odontologia of the Universidad de Costa Rica from August to October 2014

A comparison of clinical cases related to surgery of the mandibular third molars was performed. A questionnaire was applied to patients who presented to the Facultad de Odontologia of the Universidad de Costa Rica with mandibular third molars to extract by surgical technique, ASA I, with recent panoramic radiographs and previously evaluated by the instructor in charge. The position of third molars was performed with a radiographic analysis by the classification of Winter, Pell and Gregory. The available space in relation to upper airway and adjacent structures was determined according to Mallampati to determine position of tongue. All pre-existing conditions chosen from patients as study variables were recorded. The intraoperative and postoperative variables were evaluated by means of the continuity of the questionnaire, noting the data chosen in the time determined for the due follow-up. Variables marked as side effects present in patients chosen for the sample were determined in the controls previously evaluated. The conclusions were obtained from the tabulated results, with the purpose of forming criteria in the students of the Facultad de Odontologia of the Universidad de Costa Rica. The student will be prepared to discern the evaluation of pre-existing conditions, choice of flap and appropriate medication when performing lower third molar surgery
