Description
At present, 26 of the naturally occurring elements are known to be essential for animal life: 11 major elements and 15 trace elements (F, Si,V,Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni,Cu,Zn,As,Se,Mo,Sn,I). Grouping of trace elements into essential and nonessential or toxic, may be inaccurate and misleading; all essential elements become toxic at sufficiently high intakes. Activation analysis, especially neutron activation analysis in both its instrumental and radiochemical techniques, is an important method for the in-vitro determination of trace elements. Charged particle and instrumental photon activation analysis are also discussed. 245 refs, 8 tabs, 2 figs
