Temperature and pressure in the atmosphere of Jupiter
Description
The results of a determination of the temperature and pressure in the atmosphere of Jupiter made by the Pioneer 10 spacecraft are compared with radio astronomical measurements of the planet's brightness temperature. It is shown that the radio astronomical measurements agree well with a model based on the Pioneer 10 infrared measurements but contradict a model obtained from the Pioneer 10 radio occultation measurements. A possible explanation, connected with the dynamics of the atmosphere, is given for the disagreement between the models obtained as a result of the occultation and the infrared measurements. The presence of vertical motions with a velocity of 1.2 km/s at the level with T=130K is required for agreement
