Development of 133Ba source for its use in indigenously developed thyroid monitor

  • 1. Radiopharmaceuticals Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai(India)

Description

Long lived radionuclides are frequently used as reference or check sources in nuclear instruments deployed for measurement of radioactivity in various applications. In case of gamma measurements, depending upon the energy of concern 60Co, 137Cs, 133Ba etc. are used in the form of rod or disc of standard dimensions for their use in well type NaI (Tl) scintillation counters and GM counters respectively. The sources comprising of these radionuclides in different geometries can be prepared and used in customized phantoms for specific applications. 131I is one of the most widely used therapeutic radionuclide which is used worldwide for management of various thyroid disorders including thyroid cancer
