Start of the SAPIERR project of regional final storage of radioactive waste in the European Union
Description
The first working meeting of the SAPIERR project about regional final storage of radioactive waste in the European Union was held in Piestany, Slovak Republic, on February 19 and 20, 2004. SAPIERR stands for Support Action: Pilot Initiative for European Regional Repositories. This is an independent study supported financially by the European Union within the 6th Research Framework Program. The background to the project is the debate about the feasibility of regional repositories for radioactive waste in the European Union, which has come up again especially with a view to the new accession countries and the draft of a waste management directive within the framework of the Nuclear Package. The results of the SAPIERR Project will be presented in Brussels at a concluding international seminar, most probably in October 2005. The seminar will be open not only to the participating countries but also to other interested European and non-European states. (orig.)

Am 19. und 20. Februar 2004 fand in Piestany in der Slowakischen Republik die erste Arbeitssitzung des SAPIERR-Projekts ueber eine regionale Endlagerung radioaktiver Abfaelle in der Europaeischen Union statt. Die Bezeichnung 'SAPIERR' steht fuer 'Support Action: Pilot Initiative for European Regional Repositories'. Es handelt sich um eine unabhaengige Studie, die von der Europaeischen Union innerhalb des 6. Forschungsrahmenprogramms finanziell unterstuetzt wird. Hintergrund des Projekts ist die Diskussion ueber die Machbarkeit moeglicher regionaler Endlager fuer radioaktive Abfaelle in der Europaeischen Union, die insbesondere im Hinblick auf die neuen Beitrittslaender und den Entwurf einer Entsorgungsrichtlinie im Rahmen des 'Nuclear Package' wieder aufgekommen ist. Die Ergebnisse des SAPIERR-Projekts werden im Rahmen eines abschliessenden internationalen Seminars, voraussichtlich im Oktober 2005 in Bruessel praesentiert. Das Seminar steht ausser den Teilnehmerstaaten auch anderen interessierten europaeischen und nicht- europaeischen Staaten offen. (orig.)Additional details
