Progress on 21 cm studies of the Southern Milky Way

Low latitude observations were made on the Parkes 64-m telescope with a velocity resolution of 2 km s-1. As well as this, survey work is proceeding on both Parkes telescopes at 21 cm. On the 18-m telescope a large region (l = 2400 to 3500, b = -100 to +100) is being covered in a fully-sampled manner, with a velocity resolution of 2 km s-1. Apart from its importance for spiral structure studies, the extensive data from this survey should prove valuable for a wide range of galactic studies, especially for comparisons, with other types of radio or optical data. On the 64-m telescope higher spatial resolution is being used on a sampling basis at very low latitudes. (R.L.)
