Probing matter effects with atmospheric neutrinos

Description

Due to the specific multi-layer structure of the Earth, a new effect of an enhancement of neutrino oscillations is possible. In contrast to the MSW resonance effect this effect occurs due to maximal constructive interference among transition amplitudes, which gives contribution to the total amplitude in the multi-layer case
