Correlations between neutral pions and charged particles produced in 5 - 205 GeV/c interactions

The correlation parameters describing the simultaneous π0 and charged particle production in 5 to 205 GeV/c π-p collisions are studied. A linear dependence is observed of the associated π0 average multiplicity sub(nsub(-)) on the negative particle multiplicity nsub(-) in the momentum range under consideration. The new π-p data indicate that the correlations between π0 and charged particles do not depend on the initial state particles. The energy dependence of the correlation integrals f2-- and f20- is analyzed. The semi-inclusive π0 production cross sections sigmasub(n)(π0) are analyzed in the framework of the KNO-like scaling relation. A similarity of the sigmasub(n)(π0)/sigmasub(in) distributions in the 5 to 205 Gev/c momentum region is observed. A scale transformation allowing the universal description of all available π-p data on the π0 yields is suggested. (author)
