Perceptions of the food industry concerning food irradiation

Industry is always cautious in accepting a new process. It will ask some generic questions such as whether the process will serve particular need, whether it is cost effective, how safe the process is and what regulation will apply to the process. Above all whether process will be acceptable to the consumers. Irradiation has the advantages in a number of applications. Processing with irradiation would eliminate insect pests, extend shelf-life, improve retail condition, reduce losses and expand marketing areas. Although industry argues about labelling, neutral labelling of irradiated products seems to be more persuasive, but it is a voluntary risk.
