A design study of horizontal dry storage system in Japan

  • 1. Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., Tokyo (Japan). Nuclear Systems Div.

Description

The conceptual design of Japanese horizontal dry storage system has been carried out. Shielding, seismic and subcriticality characteristics are evaluated. It has been confirmed that the system meets Japanese rules, regulations and site-specific conditions. Additional considerations have been made to reduce the occupational dose. Automatic or remote examination system for the canister have been studied. The design has been also evaluated to store several types of spent fuel assemblies, such as the fuels with higher residual heat. Some design modifications are required to store them. The heat removal and the shielding performance shall be improved. The experimental test has been carried out to establish the evaluation method for fuel cladding temperature. Data show that heat transportation due to natural convection in the canister is effective. The analytical models are being verified using these data
