Silicon detectors for the NA14 photoproduction experiment at CERN

Description

This chapter shows how the addition of a Silicon target and microstrip chamber to an existing NA 14 detector will allow a study of coherent and incoherent charm production. Lifetimes will be measured using the coherent sample. The purpose of the NA14 experiment is to study photon hard scattering processes, for which a description in terms of the parton model and its QCD corrections should be applicable. The detection of charmed particle decays, filtering charm, high rate problems, incoherent photoproduction, e + or - pairs in the target, secondary interactions, and triggers for charm are discussed. If the ratio of beauty/charm photoproduction is better than 10-3, then there is a possibility of observing beauty
