An enlargement of the European Union (EU) strengthened its position as a centre of nuclear energetics. Nuclear power plants (NPPs) are in operation in five new member states as well as in Bulgaria and Romania, which are going to become the member states in 2007. Slovakia, Lithuania and Bulgaria represent a trio, which committed to close a part of their nuclear reactors within the framework of accession discussions with EU. Brussels decided at the beginning of the nineties, that the NPPs in Jaslovske Bohunice, Lithuanian Ignalina and four of six blocks of Bulgarian Kozloduj NPP are not possible to co-ordinate with technological requirements in nuclear safety of EU. Two blocks of Bohunice NPP will be closed in 2006 or 2008. Bulgaria closed two oldest blocks in Kozloduj NPP already two years ago, while next two should be closed in 2006. Lithuania will close its only two reactors in 2005 and 2009. In this connection EU provides these countries by financial support. However an obligation to close old reactors of soviet type does not mean that the countries gave up the development of nuclear energetics. Bulgaria plans to complete Belene NPP on the Danube. A completing of two blocks will spend 2.4 billion USD. The works on Belene NPP were stopped in 1990. The state has invested into this construction almost 1 billion USD until then. In Slovakia the construction of the 3rd and the 4th block of Mochovce NPP was stopped in 1992. Almost 600 million USD has been invested there yet. According to current analyses the completion could spend almost 1.5 billion USD. The construction of new nuclear reactor in Lithuania could spend from 1.5 to 2 billion EurosAdditional details
