Probabilistic assessment of safety

  • 1. Ustav Jaderneho Vyzkumu CSKAE, Rez (Czechoslovakia)

Description

The advantages are discussed of the method of probabilistic assessment of nuclear power safety as against the deterministic concept. The deterministic approach does not respect the probability of events in the accident chain in a big accident and thereby in practical terms excludes accidents with grave consequences. At present, analyses based on probabilistic assessment of nuclear power safety are being made at most Czechoslovak nuclear institutions and are also ongoing within international cooperation within the Complex Programme of Scientific and Technical Progress of the CMEA Countries. There also exists a follow-up on similar IAEA programmes. The Institute of Nuclear Research has developed methods of reliability analysis of safety systems based on the event tree which were applied to the evaluation of reliability and availability of selected systems of nuclear power plants with WWER-440 and WWER-1000 reactors.
