Utilization of stable isotopes in medicine

The ten lectures given at this round table are presented together with a discussion. Five lectures, relating to studies in which deuterium oxide was employed as a tracer of body water, dealt with pulmonary water measurements in man and animals, the total water pool in adipose subjects, and liquid compartments in children undergoing hemodyalisis. The heavy water is analysed by infrared spectrometry and a new double spectrodoser is described. Two studies using 13C as tracer, described the diagnosis of liver troubles and diabetes respectively. A general review of the perspectives of the application of stable isotopes in clinical medicine is followed by a comparison of the use of stable and radioactive isotopes in France

Abstract (French)

Les dix communications presentees a la table ronde sur l'utilisation d'isotopes stables en medecine sont exposees, ainsi qu'une discussion des resultats. Cinq communications traitent de l'etude, a l'aide de deuterium oxyde utilise comme traceur, de l'eau pulmonaire chez l'homme et les animaux, de l'espace eau chez les adipeux et des compartiments liquidiens chez l'enfant hemodyalise. La spectrometrie infrarouge est employee pour le dosage du DHO et un nouveau spectrodoseur double a ete decrit. Deux etudes faisant appel aux substances marquees a 13C ont traite du diagnostic des maladies du foie et du diabete. Un expose general sur les perspectives de l'application d'isotopes stables en medecine clinique suivi d'une comparaison de l'emploi des isotopes stables et radioactifs dans la medecine en France a ete complete par une discussion generale
