Indoor radon daughter concentratons and passive smoking

  • 1. Dept. of Occupatio- nal Medicine, Univ. Hospital, Linkoeping, Sweden

Description

Radon daughter exposure is a well-known cause of lung cancer in miners. Since radon daughters are known to attach to aerosol particles, it was also of interest to study to what extent radon daughters in indoor air might attach to cigarette smoke. Eperiments were undertaken, which showed that moderate concentrations of radon daughters indoors could increase considerable and evern more than double in the presence of cigarette smoke. The radon daughter levels obtained together with cigarette smoke may imply a substantial risk of lung cancer both for active and passive smokers. (Authors)
