Description

An experimental approach of the beam-plasma interactions is presented. The aim of the experiment is studying energy loss processes and transmission of a heavy ion beam through a plasma. The experiment allowed the simulation of the ablation corona resulting from the pellet implosion by a Hydrogen plasma and the study of the slowing down processes of heavy ions. Incident beams of Carbon and sulphur are used. The results of the energy losses as a function of time for Sulphur ion traversing a hydrogen plasma are given. The beam transmission through the plasma is also discussed. The experiment demonstrates the enhance stopping power of a plasma compared to cold matter
