Description
This chapter considers in detail the Type II burst and reviews the evidence for identifying these events as plasma emission associated in some way with magnetohydrodynamic shock waves in the corona. The evidence of associations between Type II bursts and other solar disturbances is then presented, followed by a detailed description of the observed features of the Type II radio emission itself. This observational data is then applied to the detailed interpretation of Type II bursts. In this context both the emission mechanism itself, and the nature of the coronal disturbances which excite the bursts are discussed. (author)
