Software-based protection for Sizewell B: the regulator's perspective

  • 1. Health and Safety Executive, Bootle (United Kingdom). Nuclear Installations Inspectorate

Description

The adequacy of the computer-based primary protection system for the Sizewell B PWR in the UK has yet to be demonstrated but a framework of requirements has been laid down. The utility, Nuclear Electric, fully understands what is required for a high quality implementation, and, as the organization primarily responsible for safety, has the job of making and proving its case, and delivering the identified elements of the required demonstration. The Nuclear Installations Inspectorate is now carefully monitoring the various project stages as these are completed. A key factor is software reliability. (author)
