Present status of nuclear power safety studies in JAERI. 1982 ed.
Description
Much efforts have been exerted after the energy crisis to diversify energy sources in various countries, and especially in Japan where resources are scarce, the development and utilization of new energy sources are important and urgent subjects. Among new energy sources, that immediately usable qualitatively and quantitatively is only atomic energy. To support steadily increasing nuclear power generation, the establishment of nucear fuel cycle is necessary. The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute has advanced the systematic and demonstrative research on the safety of all nuclear facilities including the nuclear fuel cycle on the basis of the accumulated experience and technical knowledge. The safety research has been recognized as the problem common to the whole world, accordingly bilateral and multi-lateral international cooperations have been positively promoted. In this report, the outline of safety research in JAERI, the behavior of fuel in the normal operation and accident of reactors, the behavior of pressure boundary materials and structural meterials, the technological safety test related to loss of coolant accident, the research on the safety of nuclear fuel facilities, the evaluation and analysis of the safety of nuclear facilities and environmental radioactivity, and the reatment and disposal of radioactive wastes are described.
