Experiences with processing radioactive waste at the ''Gemeenschappelijke Nederlandse Kerncentrale'' (Communal Dutch Nuclear Plant) in Dodewaard

By order of the N.V. GKN, N.V. KEMA designed and installed a waste processing installation for the 54 MWe BWR Gemeenschappelijke Nederlandse Kerncentrale Dodewaard, operational since 1968. Basis of the design was a long term storage of fluid radioactive waste material and a processing installation for the manufacturing of a government approved packaging for this waste including optimalisation of the radio-active content and exposing the operating personnel to a minimum degree of radiation. In the Netherlands the lower and middle-active waste is packed in approved containers suited for ocean dumping. Although the installation was designed for this purpose adaption to any type of container is possible in principle. Methods for long term storage of fluid waste and a waste processing installation are described. Experiences since 1976 are reported. (Auth.)
