Experimental investigation of the effects of aqueous species on the dissolution kinetics of R7T7 glass

This contribution to the study of aqueous corrosion of the French ''R7T7'' reference nuclear containment glass includes a bibliographic survey of prior investigations, highlighting the problems encountered in interpreting the interactions in systems containing clay materials in contact with the glass. An experimental methodology is proposed to investigate the effects of inorganic aqueous species separately from those of a few organic acids on the dissolution mechanisms and kinetics of R7T7 glass at 90 °C. The experimental results discussed support the idea that several glass network forming elements may have a kinetically limiting role. The most likely hypothesis to account for the absence of saturation conditions with respect to the glass in certain clay media involves the formation of complexes with kinetically limiting metallic elements such as aluminum released by glass corrosion. This work contributes to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms of nuclear glass dissolution in a geological repository environment. It facilitates the interpretation of glass alteration studies in realistic or actual solutions and may contribute to specifying near field chemical barriers in the form of additives (amorphous silica, aluminum hydroxides or phosphates) around the glass disposal package to enhance the stability of the glass matrix. Abstract (French)
Ce travail est une contribution a l'etude de la corrosion en phase aqueuse du verre nucleaire de reference R7T7. Il comprend une partie bibliographique qui fait etat des etudes anterieures et souleve les difficultes qui apparaissent dans l'interpretation des interactions dans les systemes contenant des materiaux argileux a proximite du verre. Une methodologie experimentale est proposee; elle vise a etudier de facon separee l'effet des especes aqueuses inorganiques et de quelques acides organiques sur les mecanismes et la cinetique de dissolution du verre R717 a 90°C. Les resultats experimentaux presentes dans ce memoire accreditent l'idee selon laquelle plusieurs elements formateurs de reseau presentent un caractere cinetiquernent limitant. L'hypothese la plus probable pour expliquer l'absence de conditions de saturation vis-a-vis du verre dans certains milieux argileux est la complexation d'elements metalliques issus de la corrosion du verre et presentant un role cinetiquement limitant, tel que l'aluminium. Par rapport au contexte du stockage geologique des verres nucleaires, ce travail contribue a une meilleure definition des mecanismes de base de la dissolution du verre. Il permettra d'interpreter les etudes d'alteration du verre dans des solutions de compositions reelles ou realistes et pourra contribuer a la definition de barrieres chimiques par ajout a proximite du colis de verre d'especes favorisant la stabilite de la matrice vitreuse (silice amorphe, d'hydroxydes d'aluminium, phosphates).
