Transport of radiation-induced charge carriers in liquid alkanes

Description

The transport of radiation-induced charge carriers in liquid alkanes was analyzed in zero external electric field to study the electron scavenging process and the time dependent decay of scavenger anions; the model system chosen for the study is cyclohexane containing biphenyl as the scavenger. For this purpose, Monchick's equation describing the scavenging kinetics for various scavenger concentrations, C/sub s/, was solved numerically to obtain the spatial distribution of electron cation pairs at different times and the total scavenger anion yields. Calculations were performed using the exponential, Gaussian and delta function initial distributions of the electron-cation pairs. The exponential distribution provides the best fit of calculated values over the widest range of experimental results. All three initial distributions give equivalent results for C/sub s/ less than 10-3 moles per liter. (LK)
