In the paper, the conditions required for establishing and operating an appropriate national radiation system are discussed. Requirements of the legal and institutional frameworks, as well as the fields to be covered are also described. In addition, the role and importance of international co-operation are emphasized, with examples taken from the existing radiation protection system of Hungary. (author)
