MR imaging-pathologic correlation of malignant melanoma in the hamster and clinical application

This paper evaluates the diagnostic accuracy of MR imaging in human malignant melanoma, we correlated MR and pathologic findings in hamster malignant melanomas that resembled human malignant melanomas biologically and pathologically in clinical cases of malignant melanoma. In hamster malignant melanomas, MR findings correspond well with macroscopic views of the histological specimen. The viable part of the tumor was demonstrated as slightly hyperintense on T1-weighted images (T1W1) and moderately hyperintense on T2W1. Coagulation necrosis was more hyperintense on T1W1 and slightly hypointense on T2W1, and liquefaction necrosis was quite hypointense and hyperintense on T2W1. In the clinical study (18 patients), the signal intensity of the tumor was measured and compared with muscle on T1W1 and T2W1
