MR imaging of human immunodeficiency virus infection and associated neoplasms in the head and neck
Description
This paper determines the diagnostic value of MR imaging of head and neck tumors in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and to analyze causal relationships between tumors in the head and neck and HIV infection. Thirty of 130 HIV-infected patients were investigated; including 12 with Kaposi sarcoma (KS), eight with lymphoma, six with lymphoepithelia cyst (LC), and four with oral carcinoma. Images were obtained on a 1.0-T whole-body imager with special surface coils and intravenous application of Gd-DTPA. KS was found everywhere in the head and neck, except the nasal mucosa. All 25 KS lesions could be well delineated with T1-weighted sequences, and after Gd-DTPA administration a homogeneous increase in signal intensity was seen (factor 2.8). After laser therapy (CO2) all mucosal KS lesions (n = 11) decreased in size
