The Fukushima accident: analysis, consequences and situation of nuclear energy in France
Description
On March 11, 2011, an earthquake struck the Japanese costs and caused a huge tsunami responsible for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. This accident represents the second biggest nuclear disaster ever known after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The human and material damages are colossal: 4 damaged reactors among which 3 melted hearts, more than 18 000 deaths and thousands of destroyed buildings and infrastructures due to the tsunami. The accident resulted in a radioelements relief in air, ground and water which caused fauna and flora contamination. Human health was also impacted: post-traumatic disorders, some cases of children thyroid cancers although on a smaller scale as regards Chernobyl. Mistakes was made and lessons have been learned from the Japanese disaster, especially in France where a strengthening of nuclear plants safety devices has been established as well as prevention campaign of the nuclear risk in order to prepare for a future possible accident. Abstract (French)
