Unattended verification and high speed counting of spent fuel bundles

Description

A significant development in spent fuel verification was achieved with the installation of an unattended Spent Fuel Transfer Monitor (SFTM) at the Bruce NGS. The SFTM automatically counts, verifies, and stores a spectrum on each CANDU bundle transferred from primary to secondary wet storage at rates up to 2-bundle per second. Test results show that bundles with burn-ups of 8 to 400-MWhr/Ukg and cooling times of 3-months to 9-years can be counted and verified reliably using a fixed detector/collimator geometry. It is estimated that the SFTM will save the IAEA more than 120-Personnel Days of Inspection (PDI) per year at this Facility. (author)
