The importance of the radionuclids Ra-228 for the radiation exposure due to mining residues
Description
It was examined whether radiation exposures by Ra-228 via the aquatic pathway should be considered generally in the determination of the environmental radioactivity resulting from mining activities. For decision-making the findings of investigations carried out in the area of the uranium and former mining in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt und Thuringia that are documented in the information system on mining induced environmental radioactivity (FbU) were evaluated. It turned out that relevant radiation exposures due to Ra-228 in drinking and service water can occur in areas with granitic or porphyritic rocks. However, the height of exposure is to a large extent dependent on geogenic factors. The mining induced part of the radiation exposure by Ra-228 is small and can mostly be neglected. (orig.)
