Polarization characteristics of Herbig Ae and Be stars

Creators

  • 1. Steward Observatory, University of Arizona, Tucson

Description

The polarization wavelength dependences of 10 Herbig Ae and Be stars have been determined over the wavelength range A. Upon subtraction of an assumed interstellar polarization component, seven of nine objects display an unexplained polarization peak (centered upon the 6500 A filter) the height of which correlates well with the strength of Ha emission. Four of the objects were studied for polarization time variability, with the result that Z CMa showed significant time variation. Subject headings: emission-line stars - polarization - pre-main-sequence stars
