Let them mine yellowcakethe impact of uranium mining on new mexicans

Description

Feature article:According to the Council of Energy Resource Tribes, 75-80% of U.S. uranium reserves are on Indian lands. Uranium mining in New Mexico and Wyoming has lowered local water tables, has polluted acres of land with mine stream wastes, has disrupted land with access roads and mines and mills, and has polluted the air with dangerous radon gas and radioactive dust. Tailings from yellowcake refining are a major waste disposal problem. Navajos are suing six government agencies for allowing companies to drill for uranium on government land without preparing the required environmental impact statements. In Marquez, N. Mex., a land grant community 37 mi from Albuquerque, the villagers' health and traditional way of life are threatened by uranium mining by Bokum Resources, Inc. Bokum's uranium will supply two Long Island Lighting Co. nuclear plants that are now under construction
