Neutron induced effects on lunar surface
Description
187Re overabundances between 0.29% and 15.57% were measured on the lunar surface. The 187Re enrichment is explained by the capture of secondary cosmic-radiation neutrons on 186W. The irradiation conditions of the lunar surface were simulated using a thick target of about 170 kg of artificial moon dust. The spatial and energetic distribution of secondary neutrons during irradiation with 600 MeV protons was investigated. The energy spectrum of the neutrons showed a thermal spectrum hardened by 1/v absorption and an epithermal energy dependence proportional to E**- (1.02 +- 0.08). (BJ)
