Out-of-pile simulation of deformation behavior of a thermionic fuel element under thermocycling conditions

  • 1. Research Inst. of SIA Lutch, Podolsk (Russian Federation)

Description

The results of out-of-pile model testing of thermionic fuel elements (TFE) on the uranium dioxide base at the standard thermocycling conditions for research reactor testing of full-scale fuel elements are presented. Material (Mo, W, MN3-alloy) and thickness (0.4--1.0 mm) of cladding influence was studied. It is shown that the maximum decrease of cladding diameter during fuel element cooling is about 1.0% and maximum rate of diameter expansion due to the thermocycling is up to 0.1% per cycle. The cladding made from hardened MN3-alloy with 1.0 mm thickness is not practically sensible to the fuel element thermocycling conditions
