Radiolysis of DNA and model systems in the presence of oxygen

  • 1. Max-Planck-Institut fuer Kohlenforschung, Muelheim an der Ruhr (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Strahlenchemie

Description

In relation to radiation damage of DNA, a summary is given of the current knowledge of the decay of peroxyl radicals of DNA and model systems such as free bases or sugar phosphates in aqueous solutions. The discussion is restricted to peroxyl radicals formed by the reaction of OH radicals and solvated electrons with DNA and model systems. The mechanisms and biological consequences of radiation-induced strand breaks in DNA and polynucleotides are discussed. New developments in the understanding of the 'oxygen effect', i.e. the increased sensitivity of cells to radiation in the presence of oxygen, are described. (U.K.)
