The Warrior welding manipulator

Creators

  • 1. Taylor Hitec Ltd., Chorley (UK)

Description

The Warrior project (welding and repair robot in Oldbury reactors) instigated by the United Kingdom Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) has been initiated to carry out a continuous Metal Inert Gas (MIG) weld inside the pressure vessel of a gas cooled nuclear reactor. A vital element in the program has been the design and development of a unique six axis manipulator arm. This machine has the dexterity, stiffness, precision and control necessary to carry out remote MIG welding in hostile and confined locations. Its extremely smooth and slim profile is particularly suited for introduction to the working zone through restricted apertures, which may be as small as 200mm in diameter
