Confinement physics of non-axisymmetric torus
- 1. Plasma Physics Laboratory, Kyoto University, Gokasho, Uji, (Japan) 611
Description
MHD stability of heliotron/torsatron type non-axisymmetric torus is analyzed for current carrying plasmas. For highly peaked current profiles the current-driven ideal internal kink mode is destabilized and sawtooth type oscillation is expected even in heliotron/torsatron. The L to H transition similar to tokamak case might be triggered by the sawtooth, when the plasma current exceeds a threshold value. An L to H transition model based on the poloidal viscosity is shown. ELM (edge localized mode) type oscillation is expected by the nonlinear interchange mode in the edge plasma. copyright 1995 American Institute of Physics
