Natural sulfur-38 - tracer for SO2-oxidation
Description
To determine the SO2-degradation in the atmosphere the natural activity of argon-spallation product S-38 is used. During spring and summer 1980 38SO2-data were measured at different weather conditions. The production rate of S-38 in argon was determined in August 1980. The average life of SO2 in the lower troposphere ranged between 10 minutes and several hours as was calculated by means of a onedimensional mixture model of the atmosphere. These SO2-lifes are considerably shorter than those in literature with one until two days. (SPI)

Zur Untersuchung des SO2-Abbaus in der Atmosphaere wird die natuerliche Aktivitaet des Argon-Spallationsproduktes S-38 ausgenutzt. Im Fruehjahr und Sommer 1980 wurden bei unterschiedlichen Wetterlagen 38SO2-Daten gewonnen. Die Produktionsrate des S-38 in Argon wurde im August 1980 bestimmt. Die mittlere Lebensdauer des SO2 in der unteren Troposphaere betrug zwischen 10 min und mehreren Stunden wie in einem eindimensionalen Mischungsmodell der Atmosphaere berechnet wurde. Diese SO2-Lebensdauern sind wesentlich kuerzer als die Literaturwerte von ein bis zwei Tagen. (SPI)
