Description
It is proposed to design a new helical axis stellarator of the torsatron type, named Vintotron, having both shear of field lines and a magnetic well. The coil system consists of three ordinary torsatron windings, having the same current sign and a poloidal ring system, composed of three helical windings with very small helical radii. A wide range of device parameters has been surveyed by means of computing the magnetic surfaces, the rotational transform and the magnetic well. To test the idea of the present proposal, a small Vintotron device of major radius R = 35 cm was manufactured according to the computed device parameters. (author)
