Study of the French population exposure to the 50 Hertz magnetic field

Description
The magnetic fields (MF) at extremely low frequency (ELF) have been suspected, for around 30 years, to be responsible for several pathologies in humans, more precisely, childhood leukemia. The last collective assessment by international expert groups (WHO 2007, SCENHIR 2009) concluded that the last major questioning concerning ELF MF is the statistic correlation observed in several meta-analysis between the increase of childhood leukemia risk and a MF exposure higher than 0:4μT in means over 24 h (Ahlbom et al., 2000), without any causal relation. To study the exposure of the French population to 50 Hz MF, two representative samples of this population (1000 adults and 1000 children) were created using random selection method. Each volunteer wore an EMDEX II measuring and recording MF during 24-hour period and progressively completed a timetable and a questionnaire containing specific information about himself and his home. When returning the measurement device, the pollster noted GPS coordinates at the front door of volunteer home, in order to identify afterwards electric networks near the home. To characterize mean exposures, nonparametric regression models were applied. They have allowed identifying among the data collected, the factors favoring a higher mean exposure. Each series of MF was then described by indicators and hierarchical clustering was applied. Three classes of expo- sure were defined. A logistic regression was used to identify factors favoring probability of belonging to the most exposed classes. (author)
Abstract (French)
Les champs magnetiques (CM) alternatifs de frequence 50 Hz lies a l'electricite sont suspectes depuis une trentaine d'annees d'etre responsables de pathologies, plus precisement de leucemies chez l'enfant. Les dernieres expertises collectives (WHO 2007, SCENHIR 2009) ont conclu que la derniere grande interrogation en ce qui concerne les CM d'extremement basse frequence (ELF) est l'association statistique observee dans plusieurs analyses conjointes entre l'augmentation du risque de leucemie de l'enfant et une exposition aux CM superieure a 0,4 μT en valeur moyenne sur 24 heures, sans qu'il n'existe de relation causale. La these a pour objectif de caracteriser l'exposition de la population francaise aux champs magnetiques 50 Hz, et en particulier d'identifier les principaux facteurs favorisant l'exposition. Deux echantillons (1000 enfants et 1000 adultes) representatifs de cette population ont ete construits en utilisant la methode de tirage aleatoire. Chaque personne a porte un EMDEX II mesurant et enregistrant les CM auxquels elle est exposee pendant une duree de 24 heures et a, au fur et a mesure, rempli un emploi du temps ainsi qu'un questionnaire contenant des informations personnelles et des informations relatives a son foyer. Lors de la recuperation de l'appareil, l'enqueteur a enregistre les coordonnees GPS du foyer afin d'identifier par la suite l'ensemble des ouvrages electriques se trouvant a proximite du foyer. Pour caracteriser les expositions, des modeles de regression non parametriques ont ete realises. Ils ont permis d'identifier parmi les donnees recueillies, les facteurs favorisant les expositions moyennes les plus elevees. Chaque serie de mesures de champ magnetique a ensuite ete decrite par des indicateurs et une classification ascendante hierarchique a ete appliquee sur ces derniers. Trois classes d'exposition ont ainsi ete definies. Une regression logistique a ete realisee pour identifier les facteurs favorisant la probabilite d'appartenir a la classe regroupant les individus les plus exposes. (auteur)Files
