CEF-phonon interaction in the orthorhombic compound NdCu2
Description
The lattice dynamics in the orthorhombic compound NdCu2 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. An axial symmetric Born-von Karman (BvK) model was fitted to the neutron data. Discrepancies in the BvK fit procedure have been referred to the influence of the phonon - crystal-electric field (CEF) interaction obviously existing in NdCu2. In order to take this interaction into account, a Hamiltonian has been suggested which enables to quantify the phonon-CEF interaction and to overcome the problems in the fit-procedure. For a test of the thus obtained (modified) phonon dispersion relation, specific heat data and the measured phonon density of states have been analysed. (author)
