Description

The paper and presentation Management of SNF from Submarines at the Mayak Production Association by Valery Gorn from Rosatom Corporation, Russia, provided information on reprocessing submarine SNF and management of RW at the plant. The author described various conditions of spent fuel assemblies received by the plant and how they influence the technology of reprocessing. For acceptance of damaged fuel canisters, the plant would need to arrange a hot cell for safe extraction of spent fuel for subsequent reprocessing. The paper focused on the problem of generation of RW that resulted from the SNF reprocessing. The technology of RW treatment was described along with safety measures and barriers to prevent environmental contamination. Liquid High-level RW after storage in special tanks was vitrified in furnaces and stored at the plant.
