The effects of scavengers on the photolysis of Co(acac)3 in benzene solutions
Description
The ligand deficient product(s) formed on the photolysis of Co(acac)3 in benzene was (were) found to undergo recombination reactions appreciably. Such reactions can be scavenged by addition of metal salts which form stable acetylacetonates and are transparent over the wavelength region of interest. The scavenger effects in the photochemistry were compared with those in the hot atom chemistry of similar systems. Co-60-labelled tris(acetylacetonato)cobalt(III) was prepared from Co-60-labelled basic cobalt carbonate which had been activated in a nuclear reactor. For photolysis, samples with different scavengers were exposed to a 500 W high pressure mercury lamp for 2 min at ambient temperature. (T.I.)
